Lady Rose
Heritage Cruises
Cruise the waters of Canada’s sheltered west
coast aboard the heritage vessel, M.V. Lady
Rose. Launched 1937 in Glasgow Scotland, she was
the last ship commissioned for the great Union
Steamship Company. Designed for the sheltered
waters of British Columbia, this stocky little
vessel soon proved capable of much more,
becoming the first diesel powered vessel to
cross the Atlantic driven by a single propeller.
Departing Scotland in May 1937 she battled
numerous storms during the epic 9,800 mile
journey to Vancouver, making only 3 en-route
stops for food and fuel. The Lady Rose was
originally put into service on the Howe Sound
Run between Vancouver and BC’s Sunshine Coast.
Lady Rose:
Today, with her small crew, the Lady
Rose is continuing maritime history by servicing
the Alberni Inlet and Barkley S ound from Port
Alberni. Carrying cargo, mail and up to 100
passengers on her day trips, the Lady Rose is
still operating in the same manner as she did
when she began life in B C over 60 years ago.
Canada’s West Coast is a fascinating region of
fjords and inlets where small tug boats and
supply vessels work the sheltered waters,
becoming a lifeline for local industries.
Appealing to marine enthusiasts and nature
lovers alike, few trips are as unique as the
Lady Rose. Here is a chance to travel aboard a
classic 1930’s vessel and while the ship makes
it’s regular supply run – you will discover a
rare and memorable side of life on Canada’s West
Coast.
Second vessel in the company, M.V. Frances Barkley was built in 1958 and
launched in Stavanger, Norway. Originally
commissioned for use in the Norwegian ferry
fleet, the 128 foot vessel arrived on Canada’s
west coast in 1990. Now operating in sheltered
coastal waters, carrying up to 200 passengers
and 100 tons of cargo, the Frances Barkley
spends her summers on the Port Alberni to
Ucluelet/Broken Group Islands run.
MV Frances Barkley is also
available for private coastal charters during
the spring, fall and winter.
Recommend adding Lady Rose to any
Vancouver Island itinerary. Usually requires
extra night accommodation. Best suggestion Tigh
Na Mara Resort. Passenger should bring a warm
sweater, rain jacket or windbreaker and wear
sensible shoes. It may be cool on the water.
These are working Packet Freighters and you will
be most comfortable if you dress accordingly.
Don't forget your binoculars and camera.
